In the first part, we explored what Ghaflah means: the quiet, gradual drift away from Allah, the Akhirah, and the purpose for which we were created. We also looked at how the Quran describes it, how the Prophet ﷺ warned us about it, and the signs of a heedless heart.
If you have not read it yet, we recommend starting with What Is Ghaflah? Now, let’s look at what causes Ghaflah, the dangers it brings, and how we can overcome it and return to Allah.
What are the Causes of Ghaflah
What makes Ghaflah so dangerous is how quietly it grows. It can start small, then slowly affect our thoughts, choices, and relationship with Allah. Here are four common causes that can feed it.
1. Ignorance of Allah
It’s not denial of His existence, but a shallow, functional relationship with Him that never produces genuine Taqwa. If people truly knew their Lord, the scholars wrote, they would not dare be heedless of His remembrance. Real knowledge of Allah produces love, fear, hope, and reverence. Ghaflah is what fills the vacuum when that knowledge is shallow.
If genuine knowledge of Allah were rooted in the heart, a person could not remain heedless. Allah says:
“Say: Are those who know equal to those who do not know?” [Surah Al-Zumar, 39:9]
2. Absorption in the Dunya and preoccupation with accumulating it
This is not necessarily extreme worldliness. It is the low-level, persistent occupation with material concerns that quietly crowds out every thought of what lies beyond. Allah says:
“The competition for more (worldly gains) has made you heedless.” [Surah Al-Takathur, 102:1]
And:
“They know only the outward face of the life of this world, and they are heedless of the Hereafter.” [Surah Al-Rum, 30:7]
3. Sins, each one darkens the heart further
The Prophet ﷺ explained the mechanism:
“When a servant commits a sin, a black dot is struck into his heart. If he repents, seeks forgiveness, and turns back, his heart is polished. But if he returns, it increases until it covers his heart, and that is the Ran that Allah mentioned: ‘Rather, the Ran has covered their hearts from what they used to earn.’” [Sunan al-Tirmidhi, 3334, Grade: Hasan Sahih; Surah Al-Mutaffifin, 83:14]
4. Bad company
The Quran records the bitter regret of those who followed heedless companions:
“The wrongdoer will bite his hands and say: ‘Oh, I wish I had taken a path with the Messenger. Oh, woe to me! I wish I had not taken that person as a close friend. He led me away from the remembrance after it had come to me.’” [Surah Al-Furqan, 25:27-29]

What are the Dangers of Ghaflah
1. It is the road to destruction
Allah says of Fir’awn and his people:
“Then We took revenge on them and drowned them in the sea, because they denied Our signs and were heedless of them.” [Surah Al-A’raf, 7:136]
2. It causes deprivation and total loss
Allah says:
“We have destined many men and jinn for hell. They have hearts but do not understand, eyes but do not see. They have ears but do not hear. They are worse than lost cattle. These are the heedless ones.” [Surah Al-A’raf, 7:179]
3. The heart sealed against truth
When Ghaflah deepens, the heart loses its ability to receive. Every reminder bounces off. Allah says:
“I will turn away from My signs those who are arrogant upon the earth… and if they see the way of right conduct, they will not adopt it as a way. But if they see the way of error, they will adopt it… and they were heedless of them.” [Surah Al-A’raf, 7:146]
4. It empowers Shaytan over you
Jabir ibn ‘Abdillah (RA) narrated that the Allah’s Messanger ﷺ said:
“When a man enters his home and remembers Allah upon entering and before eating, Shaytan says: ‘No lodging and no supper for you tonight.’ But if he enters without remembering Allah, Shaytan says: ‘You have found lodging.’” [Sahih Muslim, 2018]
Every moment of Ghaflah is an open door for Shaytan.
5. It ends in the Day of Regret and eternal loss
Allah says:
“And warn them of the Day of Regret, when the matter will be concluded, while they are in heedlessness, and they do not believe.” [Surah Maryam, 19:3]
And on that Day, the Quran records their confession:
“Woe to us! We were certainly heedless of this, rather, we were wrongdoers.” [Surah Al-Anbiya, 21:97]
6. The Most Terrifying Consequence of Ghaflah
One of the most heart-stopping images in the Quran is the scene at the moment of death.
“When death approaches one of them, he says: ‘My Lord, send me back so that I may do righteous deeds in the (life) I have left behind.’ Not at all! It is only a word he utters.” [Surah Al-Mu’minun, 23:99-100]
When people beg to return, they are not asking for more money, more comfort, or more years of ease. They want to return. To build. To put right what was wasted. They see, in that final moment of clarity, that they had a mission and did not live it out. And then the door closes.
Ghaflah’s ultimate cruelty is not that it destroys you in this life. It is that it ensures you wake up at exactly the moment when waking up is no longer useful.

How to Overcome Ghaflah and Reconnect with Allah
1. Dhikr of Allah and recitation of the Quran
Allah commands directly:
“Remember your Lord within yourself in humility and in fear, and at a lower voice than speaking aloud, morning and evening, and do not be among the negligent.” [Surah Al-A’raf, 7:205]
Al-Hasan al-Basri (RA) was once asked by a man who complained of the hardness of his heart. His answer was three words:
“Melt it with dhikr.” [Al-Hasan al-Basri (RA), recorded in Ibn al-Jawzi’s (RA) Dhamm al-Hawa, p. 69]
The Quran itself is the greatest dhikr and the most direct cure:
“O people, there has come to you an admonition from your Lord and a cure for whatever (disease) is in the hearts.” [Surah Yunus, 10:57]
2. Attend Halaqa (gatherings) of knowledge and dhikr
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“No people get together in a house of the houses of Allah (i.e. a mosque), reciting the Book of Allah, and learning it together among themselves, but calmness (sakinah) comes down to them, (Divine) mercy covers them (from above), and the angels surround them, and Allah makes a mention of them among those who are with Him.” [Sahih Muslim, 2699, and Sunan Abi Dawud 1455, narrated by Abu Hurayrah (R)]
3. Know the true nature of the Dunya
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Verily this world is cursed, and everything in it is cursed, except the remembrance of Allah and what is connected to it, and a scholar or a student of knowledge.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhi, 2322, narrated by Abu Hurayrah (RA)]
4. Increase your remembrance of death
Abu Hurayrah (RA) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ commanded:
“Increase your remembrance of the destroyer of pleasures: death.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhi, 2307; Sunan al-Nasa’i, 1824, Grade: Hasan]
5. Protect your five daily prayers
The Prophet ﷺ gave a direct guarantee:
“Whoever is diligent in observing these prescribed prayers will not be written among the heedless.” [Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah (1142); graded Sahih]
6. Guard your night, even with ten verses
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“If anyone prays at night reciting regularly ten verses, he will not be recorded among the negligent; if anyone prays at night and recites a hundred verses, he will be recorded among those who are obedient to Allah; and if anyone prays at night reciting one thousand verses, he will be recorded among those who receive huge rewards.” [Sunan Abu Dawud, 1398; graded Sahih]
Ten verses a day. It may seem small, but it can keep your heart connected to the Quran and help you stay away from Ghaflah. Also try to include slepping duas with it gradually.
7. Shorten your hopes to live longer
The Prophet ﷺ took Ibn ‘Umar (R) by the shoulder and said:
“Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveller”
Ibn ‘Umar (R) would then say:
“If you survive till the evening, do not expect to be alive in the morning, and if you survive till the morning, do not expect to be alive in the evening, and take from your health for your sickness, and (take) from your life for your death.” [Sahih al-Bukhari, 6416]
Long hopes are the engine of Ghaflah. When you live as though you have unlimited time, you act as though the Akhirah can wait. Shortening your hopes means treating today as real, treating this hour as accountable, and treating the mission Allah gave you as something that cannot be deferred.
The Way Back
Ghaflah is serious, but it is not a dead end. You can always pause, remember Allah, and turn back to Him.
Ask yourself: Was Allah in my awareness today? In my prayers, choices, words, and use of time? Then ask: What am I building with the time Allah has given me?
You do not need to change everything at once. Start with one small step: remember Allah, renew your intention, and move closer to Him. As you leave Ghaflah behind, you can begin to live with greater purpose and fulfil the mission Allah has given you.
